Purpose: At the high school level, National STEM Honor Society™ (NSTEM™) encourages all students to pursue their interests in STEM, providing challenging enrichment activities to augment classroom learning. NSTEM recognizes excellence in STEM activities and membership impresses future employers and college/university admission offices.
Benefits:
- Motivation for students to participate in STEM enrichment activities in and out of school
- Student access to a wealth of resources including project ideas, awards, scholarships, a regularly issued newsletter and more
- An opportunity for the student/chapter to compete for the NSTEM Advisor/Chapter STEM Champion Award and the NSTEM Student-Led Project STEM Champion Award
- An opportunity for the student to apply for NSTEM’s Extracurricular Activity Scholarship which assists those in financial need to attend a STEM extracurricular activity
- For high school seniors, an opportunity to apply for NSTEM’s College/University Scholarship which assists those in financial need to attend a college/university to pursue studies in STEM
- An opportunity for the student to compete for recognition awards at both the chapter and national level
- Program ideas aimed at fostering the student’s natural curiosity and passion for discovery and learning
- Opportunities for underrepresented youth to explore and develop their passion for STEM
- Membership in a focused group of students striving for excellence in STEM academic achievement
- An opportunity for students to take part in leadership roles as a chapter officer
How does a student join National STEM Honor Society?
- If your school has a chapter, speak with the Chapter Advisor about how to become a member
- If your school does not have an NSTEM chapter, you will need to contact the principal, headmaster, dean, director, or president of the school, share with them information about NSTEM and encourage them to Start a Chapter
Eligibility requirements for high school members:
NSTEM has established minimum eligibility requirements for student members. The local chapters may increase those requirements if they wish. So check with your local chapter for its requirement. Please note that a local chapter may not impose minimum grades or requirements in non-STEM subjects.
A student who has not yet completed the required number of hours of academic curriculum or enrichment activities can join NSTEM as a provisional member for one year. This will allow the student to be a member of NSTEM while completing their hours.
