Students and parents seeking in-the-trenches insights on applying to college gained valuable tips from a recent webinar led by NSTEM President Ken Hecht and featuring college admissions expert Dr. Pamela Ng, Ph.D., in partnership with CollegeAdvisor.com.
During the 60-minute session, Dr. Ng presented key strategies that help students stand out and gain acceptance to top universities. Her guidance offered attendees a clear look into what competitive colleges value today—empowering students to approach their academic and extracurricular journeys with confidence and purpose

STEM admissions are evaluated differently from general admissions. Notably, admissions officers place greater emphasis on their performance in math and science courses, problem-solving abilities, and a clear connection between their intended major and demonstrated skills. Admissions officers also look for depth in relevant extracurricular activities, particularly those that provide real-world, hands-on experience.

Among the key personal traits that help applicants stand out are resilience, intellectual vitality, and meaningful extracurricular involvement. These qualities demonstrate adaptability, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to go beyond expectations. The application for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) requires students to demonstrate how their interests, creativity, and dedication extend beyond academic performance.

In order to best prepare for STEM admissions, students are encouraged to take the most rigorous STEM courses available, such as Physics C, AP Chemistry, AP or Honors Calculus, and other advanced-level classes, while also excelling in them. Even if a student does not plan to study a specific subject in college, demonstrating the ability to succeed in challenging STEM coursework is scrutinized by admissions officers. When advanced courses are not available, students may show initiative by applying STEM skills in real-life contexts, such as projects, research, or innovative work shared through social media or other platforms.

SAT and ACT test scores are considered indicators of current academic readiness, rather than predictors of future success. At institutions such as MIT, California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech), Harvey Mudd, and Carnegie Mellon University (Engineering), the middle 50% of math SAT scores range from approximately 720 to 800. At Cal Tech, in particular, standardized testing is considered as a measure of preparedness for academic rigor.
