When you’re passionate about something, you want to surround yourself with people who share the same point of view. In today’s era of technology, social media makes it so much easier to connect, follow, and interact with people who share your interests!
Here at NSTEM, we utilize social media platforms to connect with educators, students, and STEM professionals. You can do the same by connecting with STEM influencers and professionals on different public networking sites!
From Twitter to Instagram and beyond, your peers are just a click away!
Abigail Harrison (@AstronautAbby)
Abigail Harrison wears many different hats—including an astronaut helmet. She is the president and founder of The Mars Generation, author of Dream Big: How to Reach for Your Stars, a trained pilot, and a Harvard Medical School research scientist. In addition to her professional “hats,” she is a self-identified influencer and role model for women in STEM.
From her content, you’ll see that Harrison has well-rounded interests, but it’s evident her primary passion is space exploration. Specifically, she dreams of one day entering space on a trip to Mars!
Her handle is @AstronautAbby on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and TikTok!
Dr. Anne-Marie Imafidon (@aimafidon)
Dr. Anne-Marie Imafidon is intelligent, passionate, and successful! She is the founder and leader of Stemettes, a member of the Council of Research England, and “the youngest girl ever to pass A-Level computing” in her youth. She also hosts her own weekly podcast called Women Tech Charge as well as a keynote speaker who has been featured in many articles, interviews, and events.
But wait! I’m not done yet. Dr. Imafidon is the author of How to Be a Maths Wiz and the future author of She’s in CTRL.
From her platforms, it’s evident that she’s an accomplished woman in STEM who wants to encourage other young women to turn their passion into a career surrounding both math and computer science.
Her handle is @aimafidon on Twitter, and on Instagram, her handle is @notyouraverageami.
Cara Santa Maria (@CaraSantaMaria)
Cara Santa Maria is your not-so-typical modern day STEM influencer! She’s a television personality, an author, an award-winning journalist, and of course, the host of her popular Talk Nerdy podcast. She has also been a science correspondent for two National Geographic shows: Brain Games and Explorer. Additionally, she consulted on the Netflix series Bill Nye Saves the World.
Before she was a personality, she was a professor of biology and psychology, a STEM researcher, and a laboratory manager. She has multiple degrees from the University of North Texas: a B.S. in Psychology, an M.S. in Neurobiology, and a M.A. in Clinical Psychology.
Santa Maria is @CaraSantaMaria on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube; however, on her Instagram, she goes by @cara_santa_maria instead.
Maya Ajmera (@MayaAjmera)
Maya Ajmera is nothing short of accomplished and philanthropic. She’s the founder and CEO of Society for Science and the Public (SSP) and The Global Fund for Children (GFC). She’s also the publisher of Science News Magazine as well as the author of around twenty different children’s books which draw in five million readers worldwide! Image Link
Ajmera has two degrees — including a Bachelors of Arts from Bryn Mawr College and a Masters of Public Policy from Duke. Alongside her other accomplishments, she’s a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced Studies.
Her handle is @MayaAjmera on Twitter!
That’s Not All!
You can also follow us @NSTEMHS across all social media platforms. Here at NSTEM, we believe it’s important to keep learning outside of the classroom. By following these influencers, you’re surrounding yourself with the subjects you love all while staying up-to-date with the most recent STEM research and news.
Hopefully, these accounts inspire you to pursue your own career in STEM and to reach for the moon (or maybe even Mars!)
