Why? Because it\u2019s just plain wrong, but it\u2019s also wrong in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHDers of all ages are wildly underdiagnosed throughout their lives &#8212; especially if you\u2019re a woman (or femme presenting), a person of color, an adult, or someone without access to healthcare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of affordable healthcare directly correlates with undiagnosed disorders &#8212; both physical and mental. This phenomena is fairly self-explanatory, but what about young girls and other minority groups? Why are they being dismissed?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><i>Underdiagnosis in Young Girls<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, traits often (but not always) present <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/chadd.org\/adhd-news\/adhd-news-caregivers\/how-the-gender-gap-leaves-girls-and-women-undertreated-for-adhd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">themselves differently in young girls than they do in young boys<\/a>. For example, girls often exhibit forgetfulness, disorganization, and issues focusing more frequently than boys. Similarly, boys present more \u201cdisruptive\u201d symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsiveness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both children experience <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of these traits, but unfortunately, the hyperactive behavior is more obvious in most boys. Additionally, the inattentive behavior seen in girls is often dealt with internally instead of externally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These variations in presentation could have an array of explanations including differences in socialization and <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/chadd.org\/adhd-news\/adhd-news-caregivers\/how-the-gender-gap-leaves-girls-and-women-undertreated-for-adhd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">even differences in hormones and puberty<\/a>. For example, women\u2019s hormones often exacerbate the anxiety or depression experienced alongside ADHD. Because of this, <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/chadd.org\/adhd-news\/adhd-news-caregivers\/how-the-gender-gap-leaves-girls-and-women-undertreated-for-adhd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical providers will treat the anxiety diagnosis without considering comorbid disorders &#8212; leading to a delayed diagnosis<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><i>Underdiagnosis in Children of Color<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hispanic children are <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3691530\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">56%<\/a> less likely to receive an ADHD diagnosis than their white peers. As for African American children, they are <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3691530\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">36%<\/a> less likely to receive a diagnosis, and the remaining minority groups are <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3691530\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">48%<\/a> less likely to receive one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The explanation behind these discrepancies is very complicated. In many cases, the barriers include <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intechopen.com\/chapters\/44763\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthcare provider bias, teacher bias, and lack of \u201cculturally competent\u201d healthcare providers as well<\/a>. These obstacles are systemic and harder to overcome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially, the same symptoms seen in caucasion children <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intechopen.com\/chapters\/44763\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are perceived as defiant and aggressive in children of color<\/a> as a result of systemic racial bias. There will be no visits from the neurotypical fairy on your 18th birthday. While it\u2019s true that symptom intensity can decrease over time, <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-in-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ADHD does not disappear when you become an adult<\/a>. In fact, adults experience many of the same symptoms as children do, but they experience them in a different environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a list of symptoms experienced by both children and adults with ADHD:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Inattention: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difficulty starting and completing tasks, difficulty regulating attention, forgetfulness, poor time management, disorganization<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Impulsivity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fidgeting\/restlessness, interrupting, excessive talking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Other: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emotional dysregulation and low tolerance for frustration<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why is it that ADHD isn\u2019t recognized later in life? If they go undiagnosed as children, why does nobody notice it later on? Can\u2019t they see it in themselves?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4195639\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Underrecognition of ADHD in adults is, at least in part, likely to be due to the mistaken belief that ADHD does not persist into adulthood, as well as uncertainty about diagnostic criteria in adults and the belief that ADHD is less severe than other comorbid disorders.<\/a>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summation, ADHD in adults isn\u2019t taken seriously at all, and this can lead to a detrimental impact on adult ADHDers lives and mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><i>The Impact of Adult ADHD<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD impacts more than school and work. It can impact relationships, finances, substance abuse, and more. If left untreated (or ineffectively treated), it has a significant <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-in-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negative effect on the individual\u2019s mental health, physical health, and quality of life<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of this, adults with ADHD commonly have comorbid conditions. In fact, 60%-70% of adult ADHDers have a co-occuring disorder. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-in-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40%<\/a> were also diagnosed with a mood disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-in-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">50%<\/a> also had an anxiety disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-in-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30%<\/a> had social anxiety, specifically.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-in-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12%<\/a> were also diagnosed with PTSD<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and finally, approximately <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-in-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15%<\/a> had a substance use disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not possible to overstate the importance of treatment for the benefit of the individual.
