However, they still manage to span every continent, including Antarctica, and they can even be found underwater.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also true that many people associate volcanoes with places like Hawai\u2019i, but Latin America actually has roughly <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.mexicanist.com\/l\/these-are-the-10-most-active-volcanoes-in-latin-america\/%23:~:text%3DLatin%2520America%2520is%2520one%2520of,southernmost%2520point%2520of%2520South%2520America&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093130996000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1Vq7XMjNHaqbM0RDuzE3P8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3,000<\/a> volcanoes in its region! While Hawai\u2019i has the two most active volcanoes in the world, <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.hawaiiliving.com\/blog\/how-many-volcanoes-are-in-hawaii\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093130997000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2GckK5sup8-8aLDbExYumC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it houses only five volcanoes<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are there so many volcanoes in Latin America? Are they dangerous? What countries are they in?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, I\u2019m here to answer all your questions! That\u2019s a lot of volcanoes!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the theory of plate tectonics, Earth\u2019s land was once a supercontinent named Pangea. Then, the land mass slowly drifted apart over time into the seven continents as we know them today. Plate tectonics states <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/37706-what-is-plate-tectonics.html&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093131001000&amp;usg=AOvVaw05Pked2a6pFNn8tLWGDYuN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that Earth is divided into slabs of rock &#8212; aptly referred to as \u201cplates.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are various ways these plates interact with each other. For instance, volcanoes form when a thinner plate wedges itself underneath another, thicker plate. As this happens, the <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/explore\/ology\/earth\/power-of-plate-tectonics\/volcanoes&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093131001000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1PtgoZKcXnQgmRxh5xARJd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">friction between the two plates generates heat, causing rocks to melt<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This change in density causes the melted rock, or magma, to rise above the surface. Once it cools, it hardens and <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/explore\/ology\/earth\/power-of-plate-tectonics\/volcanoes&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093131002000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2keq8rPYyRXvuRIIur4f--\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forms a natural \u201cvent\u201d for the Earth<\/a> to release gas, steam, ash, and of course, molten lava.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why is there so many? In fact, <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/a-closer-look-at-the-worlds-9-most-active-volcanoes&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093131000000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0yWJ6iA1Uj3smJInz6X8TF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">75% of this Ring of Fire<\/a> is located in Latin America! This group of volcanoes <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/lacgeo.com\/andean-volcanic-belt-pacific-ring-fire&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093131002000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0FFiuO8hWiT1AkS_rhdnVB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is referred to as the Andean Volcanic Belt<\/a>. This formed as a result of both the Nazca Plate and the Antarctic Plate sliding underneath the South American Plate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each of these volcanoes have <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/lacgeo.com\/andean-volcanic-belt-pacific-ring-fire&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093131002000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0FFiuO8hWiT1AkS_rhdnVB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different patterns of activity<\/a>, and some of them aren\u2019t particularly active at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>So&#8230; The Floor isn\u2019t Actually Lava at All?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So maybe not the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entire<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> floor is lava. Out of these volcanoes, only about two are dangerously active. But for the most part, you won\u2019t find a significant amount of lava in Latin America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two volcanoes are called <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/a-closer-look-at-the-worlds-9-most-active-volcanoes&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093131000000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0yWJ6iA1Uj3smJInz6X8TF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Galeras and Santa Maria<\/a>, and they are located in Columbia and Guatemala respectively. Galeras has maintained its active status for millions of years. The last time scientists pronounced it dormant, it proceeded to have one of the largest eruptions in recorded history. However, its last known event <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/a-closer-look-at-the-worlds-9-most-active-volcanoes&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093131001000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1ZUEa7jRiG6mM7pJ89OHqc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was in 1993<\/a>, but its next event is nearly impossible to predict. On the other hand, Santa Maria <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/a-closer-look-at-the-worlds-9-most-active-volcanoes&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1634093131003000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2Ut2uwRR8ksaQAznC3rUGh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last erupted in 2011, and the lava flow has been fairly predictable<\/a> over the last ten years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volcanoes are magnificent, and generally, they\u2019re safe to admire from the ground. Just make sure you do your research before messing with the Ring of Fire!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Ring of Fire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latin America is full of rich beauty, cultures, and people.
