The theorem dates back to 1637 and basically says \u201cx<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> + y<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> = z<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has no whole number solution when n is greater than 2.\u201d Fermat sent the math world into a 300-year tizzy when beside the theorem he wrote, \u201cI have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this, which, however, the margin is not large enough to contain,\u201d and then promptly died before ever writing it down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1994, Wiles won the Abel Prize\u2014sometimes called the Nobel of Mathematics\u2014for his proof. Of course, Wiles\u2019 solution is hundreds of pages long and uses methods not available in Fermat\u2019s time, so it\u2019s obviously not the slightly-too-large-to-fit-into-the-margin-of-a-book proof Fermat was thinking of, but Wiles deserves credit for never giving up! His wife deserves credit too for cleaning up after him while he<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/nova\/proof\/wiles.html&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1633883052949000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3zXOJtljNNt-gzZCg9MXEs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spent literally all day in an attic for seven years<\/a> in the throes of proofin\u2019. Gross.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Youyou accomplished her feat by extracting the active ingredient in a traditional Chinese method for treating malaria and developing a drug that could be distributed via modern medicine around the world. She\u2019s now the Chief Scientist at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine. So the next time you\u2019re in a tropical environment swarming with mosquitos so bad you resort to unloading your bug spray directly into the air like it\u2019s a can of Raid, thank Youyou for ensuring you at least won\u2019t catch malaria and die!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3. In 1963, he and his colleagues Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for their discovery that helped kick off the field of modern genetics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately for him, Watson became <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persona non grata <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after making<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-big-idea\/2017\/6\/15\/15797120\/race-black-white-iq-response-critics&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1633883052955000&amp;usg=AOvVaw294vSoErqz4yQ9tRhydWrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unsupported-by-science<\/a> remarks about racial intelligence in 2007 (guess who he thinks is \u201cgenetically smarter\u201d). In 2014, he sold his Nobel medal out of spite. Even with his ostracization from the scientific community, he<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/01\/science\/watson-dna-genetics-race.html&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1633883052942000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2uY-QlEQDbm--HfTrR43u2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stood by his racist remarks as late as 2019<\/a>. Though Watson was perhaps the most influential biologist of the twentieth century, his inclusion on this list more than anything is a cautionary tale of what happens when biases trick extremely smart people into believing obviously wrong things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Remember all those experiments through the 70s and 80s of researchers trying to teach chimps sign language and bringing them home as they would human kids and whatnot? That was all in response to Chomsky\u2019s theory. One famous experiment even involved a chimp named Nim Chimpsky. Alas for the researchers, after decades of trying to teach non-human animals language, they\u2019ve so far achieved<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/acp.eugraph.com\/apes\/index.html&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1633883052943000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3o8Uf2tlVxDu9YlxY8tCy6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">middling results at best<\/a>, nothing near the human capacity for language\u2014proving Chomsky\u2019s theory is most likely correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The moral of the story: don\u2019t take a chimp home and try to raise it like your baby. It\u2019ll probably just<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/humanspark\/blog\/spark-blog-the-science-behind-why-chimps-are-not-pets\/201\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1633883052944000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2xR_sxWY__V2uuk_xryBQt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rip your face off<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5.
