It\u2019s especially<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> important to reflect on the contributions Hispanic women have made in the STEM community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, only 27 percent of STEM professionals and workers are women and only 2 percent of that represents Hispanic This blog will focus on only 3 STEM Hispanic women, but they are very important and serve as a reminder of what the STEM world needs more of!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In no particular order, here are 3 Latinas who have changed the STEM world:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Dr. Ellen Ocha<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-30110 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/nstem.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/women1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nstem.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/women1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/nstem.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/women1-18x24.jpg 18w, https:\/\/nstem.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/women1-27x36.jpg 27w, https:\/\/nstem.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/women1-36x48.jpg 36w, https:\/\/nstem.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/women1.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit: <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/johnson\/about\/people\/orgs\/bios\/ochoa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ellen Ocha is an astronaut and a scientist from California. Over her course as a student, she obtained not only her bachelor\u2019s degree in physics but a masters <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> her doctorate in electrical engineering. While she worked as a research engineer for NASA <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/johnson\/about\/people\/orgs\/bios\/ochoa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she helped invent 3 patents <\/a><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uspto.gov\/kids\/Ochoa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for optical inspection systems, an optical object recognition method, and a method for noise removal in her images<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her greatest accomplishment, though, is becoming the first Hispanic woman to go to space in 1993. In addition, she has since become <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/johnson\/about\/people\/orgs\/bios\/ochoa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the first Hispanic and second female director of Johnson Space Center<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. She works with the New York City Department of Design and Construction to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/site\/ddc\/about\/press-releases\/2016\/pr-061716-maspeth-bioswale.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oversee the construction of bioswales to minimize pollution and reduce stormwater runoff<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> She became interested in civil engineering after watching a documentary about Hurricane Katrina in high school. She also credits the memory of \u201cseeing children play\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in dirty water\u201d during her visit to El Salvador as something that motivated her to use engineering to help improve the quality of life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3. She is the founder of the organization, <a class=\"no-link-icon\" href=\"https:\/\/latinagirlscode.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latinas Girls Code<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which provides young Latinas with education and resources in technology. Stephanie recognizes the statistics mentioned above, and she is hoping to improve the numbers with her organization. Her organization is similar to NSTEM\u2019s, which is also dedicated to providing young children the resources to be involved in STEM.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wow!
