I am so thankful for getting an opportunity to serve as a Co-Director of Chapter Development for close to two years at NSTEM. I’ve learned so much from my time here, from developing and managing email marketing campaigns, learning how to use professional CRM software, finding leads and prospects from across the nation and beyond, as well as meeting new people and keeping in touch with them! My overall take on my experience working for NSTEM is that it is an amazing company to work at, especially for the experiences, opportunities, and friendships that are cultivated throughout your time here. Who knew that people were actual people? In a way, I didn\u2019t until I joined the National STEM Honor Society(NSTEM) as an intern whose idea of work was sitting in a cubicle for 8 hours every day. This was my first real work experience and I did not know it was possible to have a conversation with the CEO about Ultimate Frisbee at 10:15 AM on a Monday. I didn\u2019t know I could learn so much from a CMO just by watching how they work with others to market our intangible product.<\/p>\n

Through high school, I had a mental picture of being able to work with other people who I only thought of in that context: work. I never imagined that the people I interact with would have genuine personalities or that I could truly enjoy talking to them outside of work. Apart from the tangible skills, this idea, this utterly simple idea and what many would consider a given axiom of life is what I gained from my internship. It gave me the motivation to stay up till 4:30 AM for meetings with Executive Management while I was on vacation in India. While leading the initiative to integrate analytics into new projects that would help me to run a company of 110+ people, I formed a unique connection with the Analytics Director that fostered near-flawless communication. In training the CMO on how to alter the Google Search-Engine-Optimization of our website, I discovered her love for NSTEM resembled that of a mother.<\/p>\n

Beyond giving me the opportunity for my first real work experience, NSTEM allowed me to find a way to contribute to this community of learners and people who were so much more than just co-workers. I hope that no matter where or in what profession I work in, I will always find a community of friends that help me love what I do just by being\u2026people.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n \n

My internship is one that I\u2019ll never forget! They taught me so much from defining what a leader is to learning how to work better on a team. I have accomplished many things in NSTEM from being a Project Manager in two departments (Market Research and Human Resources), creating new SOPs, interviewing over 50 applicants, training all new hires, and empowering others to show great leadership within five months! It\u2019s insane what five months in an internship can do for you.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n \n

My time at the National STEM Honor Society was the catalyst that led to my post-graduation career

Interning at NSTEM is life changing, especially for those who are included in the older age groups like high school and college\/university. As you get older, there is less focus placed on learning through real-world experience and more on theoretical knowledge. The project-based learning aspect is truly the driving force behind NSTEM, in which you learn a variety of concepts through your experience. The passion to learn more is truly reignited.<\/p>\n

For myself, I graduated from college in the field of Computer Science. Throughout my entire college experience, my curriculum did not give me enough real-world problems to solve through coding, something that I knew would be requested of me working in a company. I mostly had theory with little professional experience, which prompted me to seek out NSTEM Internships.<\/p>\n

At first I was confused on how NSTEM would be able to provide tasks for a Computer Science major but soon found out that there is no need for worry. NSTEM is divided into departments that are related to different career fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), as well as creative design and business majors. NSTEM ensures that all interns are deeply engaged in projects that pique their interest and aids in preparing for our future careers. Hence, they have it set so everyone interning is a part of at least two departments\/teams working on projects. Being a Computer Science major, I joined the Web\/IT Department and the Campaign Team from the Social Media Department.<\/p>\n

As a Web\/IT intern, there are always things to do. Our group collaborates to develop solutions for technology issues that come up, manage the NSTEM website, work with web crawlers to retrieve information from websites, and much more. The team always encourages us to create our own solutions to the problem and present it. Not only that, the interns working alongside you are amazing people who zealously put in effort to produce amazing solutions. Due to the diversity of the team, we get a variety of great insight on what we should, or could, be doing instead.<\/p>\n

As for being a Social Media Campaign intern, the creativity is overflowing. I am involved with creating new campaign posts to the Ready to Be campaign, which involves stirring up the curiosity and passion in finding what career path is of interest to anyone pursuing using STEM. The entire team works together to track which posts attract the most responses; whether it be from the comments under the posts, the amount of likes attained, or of the post being re-shared. We work to learn what produces desired results and push out quality content for all ages.<\/p>\n

NSTEM has expanded the way I learn through the various projects the departments collaborate on. Time management, organization, efficiency, team coordination, professionalism, and quality work are just a few of the skills that can be gained. Though my internship is yet to completed, I look forward to the new engaging projects and teamwork to come.”<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n \n

Being an intern at NSTEM has taught me a lot about how to manage myself in the professional world. Even though I am only a high schooler, I was given a lot of creative freedom in regards to building HR and collaborating with other departments. With barely any experience in HR coming into the internship, Eric and Ken still valued my opinions and allowed me to experiment with ideas that I had. As I continued with the program, I found that I started growing more confident in my abilities.
