Simran Kalra
Hi there! My name is Simran Kalra and I am from the state of Michigan. I am currently a rising high school senior (at least as I am writing this). I am a Senior Director at the National STEM Honor Society (NSTEM). I am also the Vice President of Finance in my school’s DECA Chapter, am the business manager for my school’s newspaper, and have even started my own business! As you can see, I love all things business! But I did have my struggles on my way to who I am today.
When I was younger, I absolutely sucked at math. I struggled with basic skills such as double-digit multiplication and long division. Even though I was placed in the accelerated math program from a young age, it quickly became apparent to my teachers and I that this program was not quite the right fit for me. I saw my classmates excelling and when I struggled to keep up with them I eventually had to leave the program. The following year, I ended up being on the regular track for math and I felt devastated. Being an Asian-American, a huge part of my identity was that I was supposed to be good at math, right..? Or so I thought. Instead of dwelling on the negative, I became determined to change my mindset about math and improve my math skills along the way. So, the process began. Every Saturday, my parents and I would sit down and go through every math workbook we had, starting from the basics and moving on upward. Eventually, I tested back into the accelerated math program and have been excelling ever since.
Looking back, I used to think that it was my intelligence that was the problem; I thought that I would never be able to be as good as my peers. However, I soon realized that all I really needed was guidance. It didn’t really matter where that guidance came from, as long as it was from someone who I trusted and who was a good teacher which is exactly why I took on a position of leadership at the National STEM Honor Society. NSTEM’s mission is to help as many kids as quickly as possible in order to help them become career-ready for the respective fields they would like to pursue in the future. I took up the position of Senior Director here at NSTEM because I know that if I had had a community like one that comes from an NSTEM Chapter when I was younger, I would have had so much more confidence in my math abilities. Now, I want to be able to give the same opportunities to the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed youngsters who are eager to take up any opportunity to learn and grow. I want to be able to create a safe space for students to interact with each other and be able to make mistakes and grow immensely. I couldn’t be happier to say that I am a leader at NSTEM – it is a position that has been both challenging and rewarding and has taught me to be flexible and empathetic to those around me. I am so thankful to be able to make a difference in the lives of those who never want to stop learning. Onwards and upwards we go!

Southern New Hampshire University
My name is Nathon; I am from San Diego, more specifically, a small city called San Marcos. I am currently majoring in computer science at Southern New Hampshire University. However, I plan to transfer to a University of California or University of Texas school in the Fall 2022 semester. What attracted me to computer science was being a jack-of-all of trades in the tech industry. However, recently, what has caught my attention the most is creating an app that will revolutionize the big tech industry. Once I gain more knowledge and experience about building and sustaining an application, I will create and unveil it. Until then, I hope to create connections, build friendships, and gain profound experience and knowledge to better myself as a person and as a developer.
I am in the NSTEM Analytics department; however, once a position opens at the Website and IT department, I plan to move there.
What I enjoy the most about S.T.E.M is problem-solving. Our tech industry innovates new technologies every day, and with those technologies answers, old/previous questions and problems, new problems arise for us to solve. I am attracted to S.T.E.M because I want to be a part of the industry that helps solve those critical questions that will help us leap further as a species. Although I do not have many S.T.E.M-related accomplishments, my ambition, persistence, and determination push me forward and drive me to meet my goals and dreams.

I am a community college student from California, pursuing a degree in Computer Science with intent to transfer in Fall 2022. I grew up in the Bay, in the heart of modern tech’s birthplace. I’ve been interested in engineering from a young age, and the STEM and Education movement is very close to my heart. I’m super interested in seeing the future of modern tech, especially in the field of machine learning and neural networks. I really enjoy STEM because it’s a culmination of the practical skills from math and science as well as the creative skills from engineering. Simply being able to manifest ideas into a physical and usable form from scratch is something that only STEM can accomplish. I’ve used STEM to create coding projects, from replicas of real life games to websites that help communicate API data. One of the projects I’m most proud of was a virtual image of the Windows OS created for cybersecurity that was programmed to help teach students about how to find and fix vulnerabilities in their computers.

I am just starting to intern at NSTEM. The environment seems very welcome, inclusive, and positive so far! I decided to apply as an intern as I loved the company’s mission, as it aligned with my personal goals and interests. I am super excited to get started with working with NSTEM!
Growing up, I have mainly been involved with STEM through Science Olympiad, which I have been in for about eight years now. It has allowed me to experience different fields by competing in different events while also having fun at competitions and practice. Science Olympiad also sparked my love for creating and learning- two things that I can actively apply in Computer Science!
A common question everyone asks is “how are you going to change the world?”. I truly believe that the answer to this question lies within the STEM field, which makes it so enjoyable because there is always something new to learn!

Being raised in the Hudson Valley, I love the outdoors, and I hope to one day work on cleaning the Hudson River. I hope to gain experience through NSTEM meet some great people!
The thing I enjoy the most about STEM is being able to use what I learn in the classroom in the field. During my 6 semesters at RPI, I have learned quite a bit about geology and geologic history. It is really great being able to go on a hike with friends, and telling them everything about a rock formation. It never gets old when someone comes up to me and asks, “what kind of rock is this?”

I am a new intern here at NSTEM, but I am looking forward to acting as a liaison for NSTEM and communities that would greatly benefit from partnering with us. I believe encouraging students to follow STEM career paths will shape a brighter future for our society.
My mom instilled a love for science in me at a very young age. Growing up, she often took me to science museums, zoos, aquariums, and libraries. I excelled in STEM classes because I enjoyed the learning experience; it reminded me of the time I spent with my mom. It wasn’t long before I saw life through the goggles of a scientist. Science was everywhere, and science was everything. I hope students feel the same way while engaging in the course material provided by NSTEM.
Shana Figueroa
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Shana Figueroa
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Shana grew up in Seattle and went to Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, then joined the military after graduation and bounced around the country for 20 years. She’ll soon be retiring from the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel, where she launched rockets and built satellites for Uncle Sam – among other things she’d have to kill you if she told you about (she’s kidding…or is she???). Besides an odd habit of referring to herself in the third person, Shana has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in aerospace engineering, a 4th-degree blackbelt in Taekwondo, has written seven books, makes movies, and plays the guitar and violin. She and her husband Chris have been happily married for seventeen years and have a perky pug as well as two young daughters who beg her not to embarrass them in front of their friends.
She’s brand-new to NSTEM and can’t wait to start making videos and doing PR work with the team! She’s coming to NSTEM as part of the SkillBridge program for military members transitioning out of the service. The program allows retiring members to intern at a company for their last few months of service in order to ease the transition into a civilian career.
She’s a huge nerd and loves all things STEM; in particular, she has a special passion for anything related to space, big data economic theory, and psychology. One day she’s going to write a story about science saving the world as a subversion to the “mad/evil scientist” trope, which always rubs her the wrong way.
…BTW, military scientists trying to create super soldiers is not a real thing either, she can assure you; battlefield medicine being adopted by civilian hospitals and then used to save millions of lives is a real thing, though. See? Science saves lives!

This summer, I would like to sell all of my worldly possessions and “live in a van down by the river”.

This is Frank Hittel, Project Manager of the NSTEM Website Department. I started partaking in STEM during high school with a competitive robotics team. With that inspiration, I have achieved a BSEE At Trine University and currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Computer Science at Western Governor’s University. STEM has been a major part of my life and I hope other students have that chance as well. As a person who was deeply affected by the introduction of STEM in my primary education, it is an honor to help such an organization to provide these important opportunities.
